Edinburgh : Attractions

The top attraction in Edinburgh is its internationally renowned castle. Built in the 12th century, the castle has become a symbol of Scotland’s national identity and is also home to the Honours of the Kingdom (crown jewels). Guided tours are available throughout the castle and its surrounding areas.

Equally magnificent is the Palace of Holyrood House at the end of Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, the queen’s official residence in Scotland. The royal apartments have been the setting for many events that have altered Scotland’s history. Once home to the infamous Mary Queen of Scots, whose dramatic reign came to an end with the murder of her secretary Rizzio, visitors can see various royal collection exhibits here.

Edinburgh’s oldest tourist attraction is Camera Obscura and World of Illusions, built next to the castle in 1853. Here you can see anything from live panoramic views of the city to giant kaleidoscopes. A perfect attraction to keep the kids entertained.

Saint Giles Cathedral, in the heart of Edinburgh, is world renowned for its stained glass windows, Thistle Chapel and antique Rieger organ. It was also the church of celebrated reformation leader John Knox.
